DANSINKRAN (1943)
Original Dimensions:
20" x 12" x 12"
Original Materials:
Flos Regina (Queen of Flowers)
This piece of sculpture was inspired after a visit to
Kumase. Dansinkran is a kind of indigenous or traditional hairstyle of an
Asante woman. It is regarded as particularly noble. A short cropped hair
with sharp trimmed edges at the point of the neck and the head results in a
broad high forehead which is regarded as a sign of beauty. This is supported
by an inclined long neck which is regarded as a sign of beauty among the
Akan.
